Schools and Colleges

Wokingham Waterside Centre and its staff provide a variety of ways to enhance young peoples learning. We work closely with many schools and colleges to create outdoor, hands on, practical and fun lessons for subjects that can be effectively taught on the water. We create memorable activities that aid learning via outdoor experiences in a truly special and inspiring environment. We are committed to inclusive participation and pride ourselves on delivering high quality experiences - whether it be a curriculum specific lesson, team or individual’s confidence building exercise or a skills based session.

Below is a brief outline of a few key syllabus options. Please contact us to discuss other possibilities and ideas.

Primary Schools

Geography Lessons (1 hour and a half)

Year 5. Unit 11 - Is water usable?
Students use samples from the river, lake, tap and distilled water and compare their smell and appearance. Discuss how water can be cleaned by filtering. Filter samples and test PH values.

Year 6: Unit 14 - Where is the river?
Sketch the river. Explain erosion. Measure depth and speed of river using our equipment.

Physical Education (1 - 2 hours)

Year 5/6: Unit 30.
Our spectacular site is wonderful for creating an unforgettable Orienteering experience. In boats on the water and / or on land.

Secondary Schools

Geography (2 -3 hours)

Year 8: Unit 7 - Rivers
Explore the difference between erosion and weathering. Pupils measure the depth, speed of the river and angle of the river bed.

Year 9: Unit 23 - Local action and global affects
Use the river to survey different uses and leisure activities. Students map different uses and users. These records can be used to establish possible conflicts of interest between different uses and user groups later. Data-collection forms can be designed and used at the Centre.

Physical Education (1 - 2 hours)

Year 7/8: Unit 25 - Orienteering
Students learn how to recognise symbols and features and how to use simple orientation techniques; e.g. setting the map to ground, collecting obvious features, taking direction from major landmarks.

Year 9/10: Unit 26 - Pupils learn specific skills in canoeing or kayaking
They use these skills whilst orienteering using a compass to follow a trail or pick up orienteering markers both on water and off water.
